News from MVS 12.01.2011

During 2010, in the boarder and dangerous city of Ciudad Juárez hundreds of killings ocurred. However, most of those female killings are still scot-free.

Susana Chávez was another woman with, as everyone, illusions, problems and a life ahead, Susana Chávez was a women who fought for the defense of women murders in Ciudad Juárez.

Chávez started writing poetry when she was only eleven, she studied Psychology in his hated and loved city, Ciudad Juárez, and she was also killed there. In January 6th 2011, the activist Susana Chávez was raped and murdered. She created the sentence “Ni una muerta más” (Not anymore deaths) which became a symbol in the struggle against feminicides. After years fighting against violence she became the victim of her own reivindications.

This women, who fought in favor of human-rights through art was killed by three under-age men who were only 17. As the mother of Susana Chávez stated “I do not feel calm, justice should be done”.

With a total number of 446 killings during 2010, one death every 20 hours has become the mirror of the corruption and inequalities of Ciudad Juárez as the Coordinator of Justice for Our Daughters, Norma Ledezma, ratifies.

Chávez with her words and her death show us that a lot have to be done. On her last blog entry she wrote: “I felt pain seeing the violence we are living in my native town, Ciudad Juárez. But now I feel myself empty and homeless, as happen with many of us.”
